At this week's genecats meeting, Ed Green will be giving the talk "Detecting positive selection in humans using the Neandertal genome".

Description: We recently completed one-fold coverage of the Neandertal genome. Despite their 300,000 year old population divergence and their extinction 30,000 years ago, Neandertals fall within human genetic diversity over much of our genome. This fact enables a very powerful test for positive selection in humans. Importantly, it allows one to probe a time depth heretofore intractable by current methods. I will outline the test as implemented in our recent publication and plans for refinement.
