Canonical gene details SOD1 uc002ypa.2
Other loci: uc002ypb.2, uc002ypc.2
Description: superoxide dismutase 1, soluble
RefSeq Summary (NM_000454): The protein encoded by this gene binds copper and zinc ions and is one of two isozymes responsible for destroying free superoxide radicals in the body. The encoded isozyme is a soluble cytoplasmic protein, acting as a homodimer to convert naturally-occuring but harmful superoxide radicals to molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The other isozyme is a mitochondrial protein. Mutations in this gene have been implicated as causes of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Rare transcript variants have been reported for this gene. [provided by RefSeq].

Comments to gene symbols can now be added to the Wiki track. Enter this functionality via the UCSC genes details page User annotations link in the section Sequence and Links to Tools and Databases.

The initial wiki article text will include the description comments as seen in the details page. Thus, if the item is found by browsing wiki pages, it will have some information about the gene being annotated. Also, the wiki article will refer back to the genome browser via generic links referencing only the gene name and organism. Therefore, the wiki article links should function even if the genome browser changes, assuming the same genes can be found in the newer assembly.
