Human BDNF locus contains the natural antisense transcripts of BDNFOS that has reverse complementarity to its sense counterpart with 224 nucleotides. BDNFOS overlaps with the BDNF coding exon within open reading frame. BDNFOS is transcribed by RNA polymerase II, alternatively spliced, and polyadenylated; however, in contrast of BDNF gene multiple promoters, the initiation of BDNFOS transcription is derived from a single promoter composed of hundreds of alternatively spliced isoforms.
